Originally started as the charter unit of Air India, the Air India Express is now part of the National Aviation Corporation of India Ltd along with Air India , Indian and Alliance Air. The low cost airline subsidiary of Air India, Air India Express offers value for money with its comfortable, efficient and yet affordable services. The low cost carrier flies on international short range routes, offering the convenience of connectivity devoid of a high price tag.

Recently, Air India Express included a brand new Boeing 737-800 into its fleet. With its currently leased seven aircrafts of the same make, the number of aircrafts comprising the Air India Express fleet goes up to 10. The average capacity of these Boeing 737-800 aircrafts is around 180 seats. Keeping in sync with the market it caters to and the budget travel it promises, Air India Express offers only single economy class seats. With standardised meals and limited on-board entertainment, Air India Express offers better services than most domestic low cost carriers, promising to give competition to all other airlines flying on the same sectors. With a complete economy configuration, Air India Express offers fares that are approximately 25% lower than full service carriers.


Flying on short range routes, Air India Express covers international destinations across the Middle East and South East Asia and domestic destinations mainly concentrated in southern sectors with the exception of few cities in the north. The airline operates flights to Sharjah, Al Ain, Muscat , Salalah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in UAE, which are within a distance of around 4 hour flight time from several Indian cities. It also operates flights to Oman , Bahrain and Doha besides the main Asian destinations including Singapore and Colombo. Even with its limited fleet, Air India Express is able to cater to a wide range of destinations due to the quick turn around time of the flights with ground time of just about 1 hour at each destination.

International destinations include Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo, Sharjah, Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Muscat, Salalah , Bahrain , Doha and Dhaka. Air India Express is scheduled to start operating approximately 60 flights a week from Dubai and Sharjah to 12 Indian destinations in the near future besides direct flights from Kolkata to Dhaka, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Domestic destinations covered by Air India Express include Ahmedabad, Amritsar , Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mangalore, Pune, Khozikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Tiruchirapalli. The sectors covered include Mumbai-Kochi, Mumbai-Kozhikode, Mumbai-Delhi, Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Amritsar, Kozhikode-Kochi, Kozhikode-Thiruvananthpuram and Kochi-Thiruvananthpuram.
