Air India

The state-owned international carrier of the country, Air India has a worldwide network offering passenger as well as cargo services across 146 destinations across east and South East Asia, south Asia and the Middle East, east Africa, Western Europe and the United Kingdom. Founded as Tata Airlines in 1932, it became a public limited company under the name of Air India in 1946 after World War II. Air India is now part of the National Aviation Corporation of India Ltd with the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines along with their two subsidiaries - Air India Express and Alliance Air. Both airlines together cater to over 52 cities within the country and offer direct connection to 35 international destinations.

International destinations covered by Air India include Nairobi and Dar-e-Salaam in Africa, Hong Kong and Shanghai (China), Osaka and Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Male (Maldives), Kathmandu (Nepal), Lahore (Pakistan) and Colombo (Sri Lanka). The airline also flies to 4 major airports in the United States of America - John F Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport besides the city of Toronto in Canada. The airline has the distinction of offering direct non stop flights to JFK International Airport from two cities in India - Mumbai and Delhi . The Boeing 777-200LR aircrafts that are part of the recently added fleet operate on these sectors. In addition, Air India has code share agreement with numerous esteemed airlines including Luftansa, Air France, Malaysian Airlines, Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines, enabling it to expand its range of services and destinations.

As part of the National Aviation Corporation of India Ltd, Air India along with the other member airlines covers the following domestic destinations - Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Agartala, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Bagdogra, Bhubaneshwar, Bhuj, Chennai, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Car Nicobar, New Delhi, Dibrugarh, Goa, Gaya, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Jamnagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Kullu/ Manali, Lucknow, Leh, Mumbai, Mangalore, Madurai, Nagpur, Pune, Patna, Puttaparthi, Port Blair, Ranchi, Raipur, Srinagar, Surat, Silchar, Thiruvanthapuram, Tiruchirapalli, Tirupathi, Varanasi, Vadodara and Vishakhapatnam.

Air India has one of the largest fleets with a mix of aircrafts including Boeing, Airbus, CRJ and ATR. In 2008, Air India was one of the largest purchasers in the world with a total aircraft order of 111 (68 from Boeing and 43 from Airbus).
