It was commonly known as 'Indian' before becoming a merged entity in the NACIL - National Aviation Corporation of India Ltd. Indian along with its fully owned subsidiary, Alliance Air merged with Air India on August 27, 2007. Indian was a name adopted by Indian Airlines as a marketing strategy in Dec 2005 to refurbish its brand name and Alliance was renamed Air India Regional.
The Indian Airlines came into existence with a merger and nationalization of seven private airlines under the legislation enforcing the Air Corporation Act of 1953. The airline commenced its first operation on August 1, 1953 serving the Indian sub-continent. Indian Airlines enjoyed monopoly over the domestic skies from August 1953 to January 1994. The airline with 64 domestic connections has approximately 35,000 seat offerings per day. It's been an undisputed leader for over 50 years. Even the competition with private airlines, it maintained a total market share of 22% in June 2006 making it the second largest domestic airline in the country. The 16% market share before the merger still gave the airline 3 rd position in 2007 after Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. Indian Airlines experienced two major business turndowns in early 1990 and more recently with the aviation fuel price hike and additional competition with low cost carriers entering the sector.
The headquarter of the airline is in New Delhi, with services to 16 international destinations covering as far as Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh, Jedha in the Middle East in the west, Kabul, Lahore, Katmandu, Dhaka, Chittagong, Yangon, Colombo and Male in the Subcontinent and Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok in South East Asia. Indian Airlines has also earned a reputation of having 'Asia's largest regional airline system', flying to remote airports of India and spanning the entire sub-continent. The network also includes code share agreements with Uzbekistan Airways, GMG - Bangladesh and Gulf Air.
Indian Airlines fleet consists of over 68 aircrafts owing a maximum to Airbus-A320's. The mix includes 3 Airbus A300, 48 Airbus 320, 6 Airbus A319, 2 Dornier DO-228, 4 ATR-42 and 11 Boeing 737's. The Airline carries more than 7.5 million passengers annually with staff strength of around 18,000 to provide well coordinated, adequate, safe and economical services.
